Downswing and Follow-through

|
The way that the body reacts in the downswing and follow-through
is determined somewhat by the backswing that any individual
has made. In an ideal world a good backswing will produce
a free flowing release of power at impact and result in a
posy professional looking finish. I always encourage the juniors
to copy and pose for the cameras like Tiger or Anneka.
I would like not to get too technical about the downswing
and follow-through, so I will just point out a few details
for you to mentally feel or encourage your muscles to do.

|
Photograph 1
By completing my backswing I have now created a culmination
of energy, my shoulders have coiled up against my
lower body forcing weight onto my right side and my
club shaft has in effect loaded with power.
This has created a natural unwind reaction to start
of the downswing.
|
| Now lets follow the sequence of
movements through this series of photos: |
|
|
Photograph 2
This photo shows the start of the downswing, the
forward motion of my left hip as it makes a small
lateral movement towards the target then rotational
as the body weight naturally starts to transfer from
my right to my left foot.
At this stage the butt end of the grip is pointing
at the ball, then almost simultaneously my wrists
unhinge and release through impact to the target.
|
| Now for SLOW MOTION... |
Photograph 3

|
Shows a slow motion view of the impact position almost
the same position as my original set-up, but with the
left hip having turned out of the way slightly.
Photo 4 shows my head staying very still just past
impact and the hands starting to turn over.
|

|
| Now for FULL SPEED... |
|
|
Photograph 5
Now my right forearm and hand appear to have fully
released naturally turning over.
My head is lifting with the momentum of the through
swing.
|
| |
Photograph 6

|
You can see finally that my body weight has finished
on the outside of my left foot and I have finished tall
with the club diagonally across my back.

Your Check points for a perfect finish
- The secret is in the lift and turn of the right
heel. Check that the sole of the right foot is facing
the opposite direction to the target.
- Your stomach should face just left of target the
chest and shoulders may unwind even more left of target.
- A high percentage of your body weight should appear
to be on the outside of your left foot, not your right
big toe.
